Happy 10th World IPv6 Launchiversary! Today marks the tenth anniversary of World IPv6 Launch and I’d like to take a moment to reflect on some of the progress in IPv6 deployment we’ve seen in that time.
Our measurements have tracked deployment of IPv6 at network operators around the globe based on measurement data from Akamai, APNIC, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn and Yahoo!. Many of our graphs detailing major IPv6 network deployments to Internet end users around the world tell the same story – up, and to the right.
IPv6 deployment has progressed sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly but fairly constantly throughout the period.
T-Mobile USA is perhaps the poster child for this phenomenon having delivered almost 100% of traffic from their subscribers to major content providers over IPv6 since 2018. We’ve also seen remarkably rapid deployments like Sky which went from less than 20% to more than 80% IPv6 deployment in the space of twelve months.
We just published this month’s IPv6 network operator measurements and as usual they include exciting developments in IPv6 deployment from all around the globe.
Another interesting development is occurring at Verizon. Verizon Wireless (AS6167, AS22394) has been a stalwart of World IPv6 Launch since 2012 and has had an IPv6 deployment percentage in excess of 80% for several years. More recently Verizon’s fixed line network (AS701, AS702) has started showing evidence of growing IPv6 deployment. We look forward to the continued growth of this significant network as part of the IPv6 Internet.
Finally, the new year seems to have brought a renewed impetus to deploy IPv6 in Armenia.
We just published this month’s IPv6 network operator measurements and as usual they include exciting developments in IPv6 deployment from all around the globe.
Orange Moldova (AS25454) is a subsidiary of Orange S.A. operating in Moldova since April 1998. The company is also an internet service provider and fixed voice services provider for business. At this time, Orange has GSM coverage of 99.4% of the population, and 98.9% of the country’s territory, plus 88.5% of 3G services. This month’s IPv6 network operator measurements show Orange Moldova ranked 115th with a very rapidly growing IPv6 deployment percentage of 8.91%.
If you’re a network operator deploying IPv6 and would like to join Orange Moldova and the other networks that make up the ranks of World IPv6 Launch participants, please register your network for measurement.
We just published this month’s IPv6 network operator measurements and I’d like to highlight one particularly exciting development in IPv6 deployment from French ISP Free.
Free SAS – (AS12322), part of the Illiad group, is a French telecommunications company that provides voice, video, data, and Internet telecommunications to consumers in France. Free were an early adopter of IPv6 and deployed their original IPv6 infrastructure in only 5 weeks at the end of 2007 thanks to an innovative 6rd (IPv6 rapid deployment) proposal by Rémi Després. This month’s IPv6 network operator measurements show Free SAS ranked 17th (up from 28th last month) with an IPv6 deployment percentage of 72.73% (up from 45.61% last month). This represents a huge monthly increase and is further proof that Free can deploy IPv6 at scale in very short order.
If you’re a network operator deploying IPv6 and would like to join Free and the other networks that make up the ranks of World IPv6 Launch participants, please register your network for measurement.
